Role of State Governments in Achieving Sustainable Agriculture by 2030

State governments in India are working towards achieving agricultural goals by 2030 by implementing National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) initiatives, manging water resources, managing land and helping to promote climate related practices. They push forward in adopting organic farming, helping in micro irrigation and helping in soil health management and conserving natural resources and help in increasing farmers income.

Key roles and actions of state governments include:

  • Implementation of Various Important Schemes: Some of the schemes that help farmers are PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), Soil Health Card Scheme, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY-RAFTAAR), Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maan Dhan Yojana (PMKMY).
  • Water Management & Conservation: The government has set up “More Crop Per Drop” via the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) to help farmers in better water management and teaching them to use the water efficiently.
  • Promoting Climate-Resilient Agriculture: Government has implemented various strategies that focus on drought prone places, help in growing Agro Forestry and also helping in Zero Budget Natural Farming in some areas.
  • Infrastructure & Capacity Building: Establishing Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), building cold storage units and also building a good network towards input supply chain and providing training locally helps farmers.
  • Supporting Diversification: Helping farmers in growing various crops. Encouraging them in horticulture, Dairy Farming, Bee Keeping, mushroom cultivation and so on which helps in increase of income to farmers.
  •  Technology: Government is making an effort to help farmers to give accurate data to farmers regarding climate conditions, soil health and giving them data which helps in making decision easily and helping to plant disease free planting materials and so on.
  • Financial Support and Subsidies: The financial aspect plays a very major role in developing farming, here government should provide loans to farmers on a low interest and giving them grants and also giving them subsidies for fertilizers, seeds, and machineries to make farming affordable.  
  • Research and Extension Services: Government should invest in agriculture research for high yielding, disease free crop varieties and providing good training to farmers on modern technique farming or organic techniques.
  • Price Stabilization and Marketing: Government should help farmers in price; here they have to implement minimum support prices (MSP) for crops to help farmers from market fluctuations and establishment of marketing boards for fair sales.  
  • Promotion of Trade: To help farmers to export produce and helping in managing import and export policies to protect domestic produce.
