In the race to meet deadlines…
are we missing the moments that truly matter?

At 8:15 PM, Soumya was still typing.

Her laptop sat open on the dining table, the glow of the screen reflecting in her tired eyes.

From the other side of the table, her daughter Meera watched quietly, swinging her legs back and forth.

“Mom… should I start eating?” she asked softly. Soumya didn’t look up immediately.

“Hmm… yes, baby… just one minute,” she replied, eyes still fixed on the screen.

That one minute stretched longer than it should have.

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably lived a moment like this. Maybe not as Soumya.

Maybe as Meera.

Or maybe as someone sitting in silence, waiting for attention that is delayed… not denied.

Ananya wasn’t careless.

She was responsible. Dedicated. Someone who took pride in doing her job well. Her day started early packing lunch boxes, getting Meera ready for school, rushing through traffic, attending back-to-back meetings, handling expectations that never seemed to end.

By the time she returned home, her body was present… but her mind was still at work.

Emails didn’t stop. Messages kept coming. Deadlines didn’t adjust for family time.

And somewhere between all of this…

She told herself, “Just finish this, then I’ll relax.”

But there was always something left to finish. That evening, Meera didn’t complain.

She quietly started eating, glancing at her mother every few seconds. After a while, she said something simple something that didn’t sound like a complaint, but felt like one.

“Mom, you’re always busy when I’m free.” Soumya paused.

Her fingers stopped typing.

For the first time that evening, she really looked at her daughter not just saw her, but noticed her.

The half-eaten food. The waiting eyes.

The quiet acceptance.

And in that moment… something shifted. This is not just Soumya’s story.

This is the story of so many homes today.

Where dinner table are shared with laptops.

Where conversations compete with notifications.

Where presence is divided between here and elsewhere. We are all trying. Trying to build careers.

Trying to provide better lives.

Trying to be responsible, dependable, successful.

But in trying to do everything right…

we sometimes miss what matters quietly. Balance is often misunderstood.

It is not about giving equal time to everything.

It is about giving undivided attention even if for a short while.

That night, Soumya did something small. She closed her laptop.

Not because her work was over

but because she realized her day shouldn’t end like this.

She moved her chair closer to Meera and said, “Tell me about your day.”

And just like that, the atmosphere changed. Meera smiled a real, full smile this time.

And suddenly, dinner felt like dinner again. It didn’t solve everything.

The emails were still there. The deadlines still existed.

But something important was restored  —– CONNECTION.

✦ A Moment to Reflect

How many times have we said:

“Just one minute…”

when it really meant “not now”?

How many small moments have we postponed, thinking we’ll make up for them later?

✦ Message to You

If you see yourself in this story You are not failing.

You are human.

But maybe… just maybe…

Tonight, you can try something different.

Close the laptop a little earlier. Put the phone aside.

Sit at the table fully present. Listen. Talk. Be there.

Because these moments? They don’t come back.

✦ Final Thought

Deadlines will always be replaced by new ones. But the people waiting at your dinner table… they are not replaceable.

And sometimes, the smallest decision like closing a laptop /a phone can open the door to the moments that truly matter.
