Starting Over Stronger Than Ever Refocusing on Health After a Setback

Life has a funny way of testing your limits when you least expect it. In my case, it was a seemingly endless three-month battle with a severe cough that turned out to be more than just an irritating symptom. Along with the cough, a routine check-up revealed that I was borderline diabetic. The combination of health challenges left me feeling vulnerable, discouraged, and unsure of how to move forward. But through reflection, determination, and a redefined sense of purpose, I learned how to restart, refocus, and reassure myself that I could still become the healthiest, most confident version of me.
If you’ve faced a health setback or are struggling to stay on track with your fitness goals, know that you’re not alone. Whether it’s illness, injury, or a wake-up call about your health, it’s possible to get back on track and keep moving forward.
The first step in restarting any fitness journey after a setback is acknowledging where you’re at—without judgment. For me, that meant accepting that my body wasn’t in its best shape. I’d spent three months battling a relentless cough that affected my energy levels and threw my workout routine out the window. To make matters worse, the borderline diabetes diagnosis was a stark reminder of the need to take better care of myself.
Acceptance doesn’t mean defeat; it means being honest about where you are right now so that you can begin to make real changes. Instead of focusing on guilt or frustration over how I’d let my health slip, I focused on what I could do moving forward. This mindset shift helped me get unstuck and set the foundation for positive change.
When we’re dealing with setbacks, it’s easy to get discouraged and feel like we’ve “ruined” our fitness progress. But fitness isn’t about perfection; it’s about making progress and staying consistent over time. After my health scare, I realized that the bigger picture wasn’t just about looking good or losing weight—it was about feeling good, being healthy, and having the energy to live my life fully.
That shift in perspective was critical. Instead of getting bogged down by the thought that I had to “start over,” I focused on rebuilding my strength and health step by step. I reminded myself that every healthy choice I made brought me closer to my goal, no matter how small it seemed.
One of the key ways I found motivation was by setting small, realistic goals. When you’ve been through a period of illness or uncertainty, it can feel overwhelming to think about long-term goals like losing 20 pounds or running a marathon. So, I started by focusing on what I could do today.
For instance:
- Walk for 10 minutes after work.
- Drink more water throughout the day.
- Replace one unhealthy snack with a healthier alternative.
Breaking down my goals into smaller chunks made them feel achievable, which helped me build momentum and avoid feeling overwhelmed. As I started hitting these small targets, I gained confidence and could then challenge myself with slightly bigger goals.
Dealing with illness and a health scare can take a toll on your emotions, and it’s important to give yourself grace during the process. I reminded myself that setbacks are part of the journey, and healing is not linear. It’s okay to have bad days, and it’s okay to take a step back when needed.
Practicing self-compassion and being kind to myself helped me stay grounded. Instead of beating myself up over a missed workout or an indulgent meal, I focused on what I had done well and celebrated every small victory.
One of the hardest lessons I learned during this period was the importance of consistency over perfection.
Restarts don’t have to be intimidating. Every setback is an opportunity to come back stronger, and it’s never too late to refocus on your fitness journey. You don’t have to be perfect, but you do have to be persistent. By taking things one step at a time, setting realistic goals, and staying committed to your health, you’ll gradually rebuild your strength and confidence.
I’m still on my journey, but I feel healthier, more confident, and more empowered than ever before. If you’re going through something similar, just know that you are capable of achieving your health and fitness goals. It’s not about the destination; it’s about the progress you make along the way.
Stay strong, keep going, and remember—you’ve got this!
Lots of Strength
